LONDON (MarketWatch) — U.K. media group Pearson said after the London market closed Friday that it has agreed to buy Reed Elsevier’s Harcourt Assessment and Harcourt Education International divisions for $950 million in cash. The divisions publish tests, textbooks and online learning material. Pearson, the owner of the Financial Times newspaper, said the deal will extend the international reach of its education publishing unit. Pearson said it expects the deal to be neutral for earnings per share in 2007 and 2008 and to enhance earnings in 2009. It also includes a tax benefit of around $125 million, which should reduce Pearson’s effective tax rate by one percentage point from 2008. Reed Elsevier announced plans to sell Harcourt in February. Reed said the deal doesn’t include its U.S. schools basal and supplemental publishing business and added the sale of this unit is expected to complete in the second half of 2007.
