Business spending by Japanese companies up 14.3% in 2006

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Spending by Japanese corporations on new plants and equipment climbed 14.3% in fiscal 2006 against the previous year, according to government data released Thursday. Business investment for the year totaled 44.14 trillion yen ($382.18 billion) on an all-industry basis, reversing a 3.9% decline in spending in fiscal 2005, the Finance Ministry said in report published on its Web site. Spending by manufacturers climbed 9.6%, easing from a 10% rise in 2005, while spending by non-manufacturers climbed 17.1%, reversing a 10.6% contraction in 2005.
Combined sales by all Japanese companies surveyed rose 3.9% to a record 1,566 trillion yen, marking the fourth straight year of higher sales. About 82% of the 31,248 companies polled in the survey responded, the Finance Ministry said. The survey did not include data from financial and insurance companies.
