Toshiba to announce HD DVD withdrawal Tues afternoon: Nikkei

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Toshiba Corp. will announce Tuesday afternoon its withdrawal from the HD DVD business, according to Japanese media reports Tuesday. The consumer electronics giant is expected to reveal plans to immediately halt manufacturing and development of HD DVD and cease sales of all HD DVD products by the end of the month, the Nikkei business daily reported Tuesday. Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida is expected to make the announcement during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. He is also expected to reveal plans to ramp up Toshiba’s investments in computer chips. China’s January CPI up 7.1%, exceeds expected 7% rise

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — China’s consumer price index climbed 7.1% in January, accelerating from a 6.5% rise in December, data released by the National Bureau of Statistics showed Tuesday. The inflation gauge was broadly in line with consensus analyst expectations for a 7% rise.
