Ping An reduces share placement plan after stock slump

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Ping An Insurance (Group) , China’s second-largest life insurer, will scale down its share placement plan by 25% amid concerns over recent declines in its share price, according to media reports Friday. The insurer will pare its planned share placement to 120 billion yuan ($16.8 billion) from 160 billion yuan earlier, the South China Morning Post reported Friday, citing comments by company chairman Ma Mingzhe to fund mangers in Beijing and Shanghai this week. Ping An unveiled plans in January to sell 1.2 billion shares in Shanghai and issue 41.2 billion yuan in convertible bonds. Ping An’s Hong Kong-listed shares have slid 20% since Jan. 18 when the fund raising plans were announced.

Japan launches study on merits of sovereign wealth fund

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party launched a study Friday to examine whether the nation should set up a sovereign wealth fund to manage its foreign-exchange reserves, according to a media report. The study headed by former financial services minister Yuji Yamamoto will take a look at how sovereign wealth funds operate in China, Singapore and the Middle East, according to the Nikkei business daily, which cited comments by LDP members Friday. The study group is aso expected to weigh opinions from academics and examine the impact such a fund might have on financial markets.
